Gordon: I couldn't stop if concussed

Times wires
Friday, October 12, 2012

Though Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned praise for his forthright handling of a concussion after Sunday's race at Talladega, Jeff Gordon, Earnhardt's teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, said he might not have taken the same path.

Earnhardt sought medical attention for his second concussion in six weeks after not going to a doctor after the first concussion, sustained Aug. 29 in a testing accident at Kansas Speedway. Prominent neurologist Jerry Petty diagnosed the issue this week and told Earnhardt to sit out at least the next two races.

Earnhardt, who made the Chase for the Championship for the second straight season, starts his enforced hiatus this week with the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He is 11th in points, 51 behind leader Brad Keselowski.

Realistically, Earnhardt would have been a long shot for the title.

Gordon said if he were in a similar spot, he wouldn't seek medical attention with the title on the line.

"Honestly, I hate to say this, but no, I wouldn't," he said. "That's why I say we all play a part in this. If I have a (chance) at the championship, there's two races to go, my head is hurting and I just came through a wreck and I am feeling signs of it but I'm still leading the points, or second in the points, I'm not going to say anything.

"I'm sorry. You know, that's the competitor in me, and probably many other guys. And that's to a fault. That's not the way it should be. It's something that most of us, I think, would do. I think that's what gets a lot of us in trouble."

NASCAR vice president of competition Steve O'Donnell said tracking concussions of drivers is a "subjective call." Doctors at infield care centers can, but are not required to, give drivers a Concussion Reduction Technology test or MRI if a concussion is suspected. Drivers with concussions must receive medical clearance to return to racing.

FULL OF INFORMATION: If you thought Kurt Busch was going to a single-car team, think again — sort of.

Busch recently signed with Furniture Row Racing, a one-car operation in Denver, but the team has a strong alliance with Richard Childress Racing as a customer for engines, chassis and technical support.

Busch will run the next six races with Furniture Row, having replaced Regan Smith, and will drive for the team in 2013.

"The basic core concept is just to get familiar with everything, communication, the process on how the team operates through some of their sequences of changes with the car," said Busch, who starts 21st in tonight's Bank of America 500 in his debut driving the No. 78 Chevrolet.

"All the information that I have from my days at Penske, my days at Roush and then working with some of the Hendrick guys (in his tenure at Phoenix Racing) this year, all that information I need to be able to digest and give to them the right way."

ALLMENDINGER BACK: With Busch vacating the No. 51 at Phoenix Racing and Smith, who was to take that ride, instead replacing Earnhardt in the No. 88, a spot opened and was filled by AJ Allmendinger, whose NASCAR suspension for a positive drug test has ended.

It's the first time he has been in a car since his July 7 suspension. Allmendinger said he tested positive for Adderall, a prescription drug.

"I've just got to get comfortable," Allmendinger said. "This is the longest I haven't driven a race car in at least six years. … So I'm a little nervous, trying to get back into the flow of things."

ENGINE CHANGE: Ryan Newman had to have the engine changed in his No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. He will lose his third-place starting spot and will start from the back.

Logano still on roll in Nationwide

CONCORD, N.C. — It's hard to bet against Joey Logano these days in the Nationwide series.

Logano raced to his eighth win of the year Friday, passing Brad Keselowski with eight laps to go in the Dollar General 300 after taking on two tires and a splash of gas.

Logano led 62 laps en route to his 17th career victory in NASCAR's second-tier series and first at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Sprint Cup regular has made 18 Nationwide starts this season.

"I just had to adjust my style a little bit and get this little (No.) 20 car rocking and get these guys in Victory Lane one more time," Logano said.

Keselowski gambled by making a quick pit stop with nine laps left, but his crew didn't get enough fuel in his tank and he couldn't challenge. He was 18th.

Kevin Harvick finished second, followed by series point leader Elliott Sadler. Danica Patrick finished 11th in one of her best efforts of the season.

FORMULA ONE: Sebastian Vettel led practice for the Korean Grand Prix in Yeongam; qualifying was overnight. … Speed Channel will not air races after this season, ending a 17-year partnership. No deal has been announced but reportedly the series was negotiating with NBC Sports Group for U.S. broadcast rights.

CONTEST: A NASCAR contest offers a round-trip ticket to Las Vegas for the after-season event "After the Lap." Entry is $20 to benefit the NASCAR Foundation, which supports children's charities; see nascarafterthelap.com for details.

WESLEY CHAPEL — Countryside put a damper on homecoming festivities at Wiregrass Ranch by scoring eight touchdowns in a 56-0 victory on Friday.

The Cougars appeared to be in full stride despite coach Jared Davis' decision to give Christian Strong the night off and go with backup quarterback Robby Hicks along with a committee of running backs.

"We're very comfortable with (Hicks) in our system," Davis said. "He's a good quarterback, and he has earned the playing time. I think he showed what he can do when given the chance."

Countryside took the lead with their first touch of the ball, senior Marreio Taylor returning a punt 64 yards. Taylor later added a 43-yard touchdown catch.

The Cougars' leading rusher, senior Mike Jerrido, took the majority of the night off but ran twice for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Cougars limited Wiregrass Ranch to 73 yards of offense, 4 in the second half.

"We've been challenging the defense all year long to keep pushing themselves," Davis said. "We keep saying that it doesn't matter who we play or how big the game is. We have to do what we do and continue to get better at it."

TAMPA — Jesuit dominated time of possession and the line of scrimmage, scoring three rushing touchdowns in the first half of a 24-6 victory over Dunedin.

The Tigers (5-2, 5-1) held the ball for 18:44 in the first half and held the Falcons (3-4, 3-3) to 27 yards of total offense. Jesuit scored first on Parker Clonts' 1-yard run to cap a 16-play drive that took 7:46 in the first quarter.

After a Tiger field goal Dunedin answered as Jordan Williams ran the ensuing kickoff back 93 yards to narrow the score to 10-6.

Trailing 17-6 after a 5-yard touchdown run by Kevin Newman, the Falcons failed to field the Jesuit kickoff, and the Tigers recovered at the Dunedin 36. Jesuit punched it in on a 16-yard touchdown run by Reggie Brown to provide the final score.

Tampa Bay Downs works to generate excitement for season

By Don Jensen, Times Correspondent
Friday, October 12, 2012

OLDSMAR — Several elements are missing these days at Tampa Bay Downs: the horses, the steady stream of patrons, the roar of the crowd from fantastic finishes.

In 49 days, that will change as the Downs kicks off its 87th season of live thoroughbred racing. Two of its graduates — Super Saver (2010) and Street Sense (2007) — have won the Kentucky Derby. And with a $2.6 million stakes program that features five graded events among 25 stakes, the Downs hopes for a banner year in its 91-day meet that runs Dec. 1 through May 5.

Track vice president and general manager Peter Berube is keeping the stakes arrangement and the daily purse allotment of $160,000 intact. The Downs is coming off a down year as it continues to compete against tracks with higher, casino-boosted revenue.

"It's very challenging because the horsemen are coming from jurisdictions that are running for these bigger purses," Downs spokeswoman Margo Flynn said. "It gets harder and harder to lure them (to Oldsmar) to race, and for the trainers to convince the owners to come here to race. So we try to keep it as competitive as we possibly can.

"But it's exceedingly challenging when we don't have any supplemental income (like casino tracks)."

Festival Day, headed by the Grade II $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby, remains the Downs' richest card, on March 9. The undercard includes the Grade III $150,000 Hillsborough and the $100,000 Suncoast. The Hillsborough will be one of nine stakes contested on the Downs' highly regarded turf course under the direction of Thomas McLaughlin, recently promoted to vice president of facilities and track services.

The Grade III $250,000 Sam F. Davis, a prep to the Tampa Bay Derby, highlights Festival Preview Day on Feb. 2. That card includes the Grade III $150,000 Endeavour and $150,000 Florida Oaks.

The track's other graded stakes, the Grade III $150,000 Tampa Bay Stakes, is Feb. 16. The Downs' final six stakes, all at $75,000, take place on Florida Cup Day on April 6.

Several stakes races have new dates. Two involve Cotillion Day, which has been moved to opening day. The $75,000 Inaugural and $75,000 Sandpiper are co-featured on the card solely for 2-year-olds.

Flynn said the movement of some stakes races gives horsemen the opportunity to run their horses at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach and the Downs. The $75,000 Lightning City, a 5-furlong turf sprint formerly on opening day, is now Jan. 26.

Other notable switches include the $60,000 Pelican (Dec. 8), the $75,000 Turf Dash (Jan. 5) and the $50,000 Manatee (Feb. 9).

Allison De Luca returns as the racing secretary.

HORSES: Downs trainer and Odessa resident Jane Cibelli, 51, who last year became the first female to win a conditioning title at Monmouth Park, captured the crown again Sunday at Oceanport, N.J.

The Hornets gave up 49 first-half points to one of the state's top teams and never recovered in the worst loss in program history, 70-7.

"They are very good," Hornets coach Mark Lee said. "Their tempo got us. They were just a lot better than us. We gotta get there."

The Raiders also had one other thing on Weeki Wachee (1-5, 0-4): Depth. South Sumter had almost as many seniors as the Hornets have players.

"That's a first-class program," Lee said.

Senior fullback Jacey Tarter scored Weeki Wachee's only touchdown on a 1-yard rush, and sophomore running back Marcus Allen racked up 100 rushing yards. Defensive standouts for the Hornets included freshman defensive back Shawn O'Gorman and senior linebacker Jacob Cimino.

Weeki Wachee travels to Bradford next week in another Class 4A, District 4 contest.

TAMPA — Spoto came out guns blazing in the second half Friday, defeating Blake 21-6. Senior receiver Bryan Barr caught two touchdowns to put away the Yellow Jackets. Barr finished with four catches for 47 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown grab on a halfback pass from sophomore Kevin Hobley that put the Spartans (2-4, 2-3) up 14-6.

"I think the quarterback had a little extra time because our offensive line got it on track," Barr said.

The only Blake touchdown came on the opening kickoff when senior Desmond Gaines returned the ball 81 yards. The Yellow Jackets (2-5, 1-5) never returned to the end zone, as the Spartans defense continually broke through the line en route to four sacks. Linebacker Rafael Morales took charge, helping hold Blake to two second-half first downs.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Wesley Chapel scored all of its points in the first half Friday night, which turned out to be just enough to hold off Ridgewood 38-33.

Jordan Primus scored twice for the Wildcats (2-4, 1-3), and Daquan Caesar's 69-yard touchdown run was a highlight of the first half. Ridgewood's Tyler Vito scored twice before halftime to keep the Rams in contention, 38-20.

Ridgewood (1-6, 1-3) came out with an impressive drive in the third quarter, with Will Fulmer hitting an open Brandon Green for a 65-yard TD reception. The quarter was all Rams when Vito scored again for the final margin.

The momentum continued when the defense stopped the Wildcats on fourth down. With the fans believing a comeback was about to happen, Wesley Chapel's Mark LaBarbera intercepted Fulmer to secure the win.

TAMPA — Neither defense had much success, but Cambridge got the stop that mattered, forcing a Keswick incompletion with 30 seconds left to seal a 30-26 win.

Cambridge (4-3, 3-3) got the go-ahead touchdown on a trick play with four minutes left. Running back Brandon Park appeared to be coming out but stayed on the field inches from the Lancer sideline. QB Garrett Young tossed to Park for a 34-yard touchdown.

"It's one of those plays that's kind of on the borderline," Cambridge coach Bob Dare said. "It's legal and it's hard. It's hard especially to do it against a good friend, (Keswick coach) Rick Sanson. But I think it was about the only way to pull out that game."

Adam Foster had 167 yards on 22 carries for Keswick (1-5, 1-4).

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez started and finished the Yankees' biggest game of the year on the bench.

After being pinch hit for in Games 3 and 4 against the Orioles in their American League Division Series, the $275 million third baseman was removed from the lineup for Game 5 on Friday.

"I'm not happy and obviously disappointed," Rodriguez said before the game. "Want to be in there in the worst way."

Eric Chavez started at third base, and Game 3 star Raul Ibanez was the DH in the series finale, won by New York 3-1. It was the first time A-Rod didn't start a postseason game for his team since 1995.

"He has been a very productive hitter," said manager Joe Girardi, who said the decision was difficult. "But he struggled against right-handers in the series."

Rodriguez, 37, was 2-for-16 (.125) with no RBIs in the series and 0-for-12 against right-handed pitchers with nine strikeouts. He was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the opener against Jason Hammel, Baltimore's Game 5 starter.

Girardi informed Rodriguez before the 14-time All-Star arrived at Yankee Stadium.

"It's never about Joe," Rodriguez said. "I always have to look in the mirror and do what I can do to do the best I can."

A-Rod wasn't the only slugger with more than 600 homers to sit. Orioles manager Buck Showalter chose to play Lew Ford over Jim Thome, who has 612 homers.

alcs: The Tigers were headed to New York late Friday from Oakland, Calif. They had about a day to savor their Game 5 Division Series victory over the Athletics in which ace Justin Verlander struck out 11 in a four-hit, 6-0 shutout. Game 1 of the championship series is tonight. Doug Fister was set to start for Detroit against Andy Pettitte.

Giants: OF Melky Cabrera was reinstated by Major League Baseball after serving a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test, but the team is sticking with its decision to not add him to the playoff roster for the NLCS.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Mitchell was able to get a critical district win against Central in front of a large crowd on Homecoming night Friday. The Mustangs went up by a large margin in the first half and held on to win 43-24.

The Bears (1-5, 0-3) had difficulty stopping the ground game of Mitchell (5-1, 2-1).

Sophomore Ryan Marsh earned 159 yards on six rushing attempts and got into the end zone one time. Junior Christian Trinidad ran the ball 11 times and finished with a total of 89 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Coming off a game against Land O'Lakes in which he scored four touchdowns and ran the ball for 250 yards, standout senior Dan Barber stayed consistent with another two touchdowns Friday. On only five carriers, he earned 39 yards and got one score. Also, he got one reception that resulted in a 30-yard touchdown.

"We did what we needed to do. I thought defensively we didn't fly to the ball as well as we did last week. Obviously, we've got to be better than that to beat Nature Coast next week. But right now we are 6-1 and it's in our hands," Mitchell coach Scott Schmitz said.

Central made a run at the end of the game with the help of junior quarterback Cole Teater, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for one.

BROOKSVILLE — Nature Coast has its back against the wall for the rest of the season if it wants to make the postseason, and the Sharks know it. Friday night, the team played like it was prepared for whatever it needed to do.

The Sharks outlasted Land O'Lakes, using all three facets of the game to for a 28-17 victory.

Nature Coast (4-3) began the game well, stopping Land O'Lakes returner Harrison Wood on the opening kickoff after he brought it back 60 yards. The special teams unit forced Wood to fumble and recovered the loose ball.

Special teams were key to the victory. Land O'Lakes (1-5) took its first lead at 10-7 in the second quarter, but held it for less than 10 seconds thanks to Sharks returner Jacquez Kincade. The senior had only two kickoff returns, but took the first one back 50 yards before taking this one back 84 yards for a touchdown to give Nature Coast the lead back at 14-10.

"I don't want to play the game over again if (Kincade's kick return) doesn't happen," Nature Coast coach Charles Liggett said. "Momentum was a big difference for us in this one."

The backbone of the Nature Coast attack continued to be tailback Matt Breida, who finished with 26 carries for 158 yards and two touchdowns. His 72-yard scamper started the scoring in the first quarter. The big night on the ground also put the senior over the century mark in rushing yardage. He has 1,044 for the year after 1,613 in 2011.

Nature Coast defensive end Rohan Blackwood, who already led the team with three sacks this season, took care of the pass rush, hurrying Land O'Lakes quarterback James Pensyl and doubling his season sack total with three in the game. Dylan Miller added two sacks as well starting in place of Joey Berrios.

Pensyl did his best to keep the Gators close. He set career highs in passing with 18 completions in 37 attempts. His 113 yards were spread out to seven targets, including tailback Wood. Wood had his best game since returning from injury, rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Pensyl also rushed for a score.

The Sharks have Hernando and Springstead upcoming in two of the next three weeks, both of which are undefeated in Class 6A, District 6 play.

SPRING HILL — Springstead played a game of ball control, turning in a strong second half to defeat district foe River Ridge 21-7 Friday night at Booster Stadium and remain unbeaten (7-0, 4-0).

"For some reason our body language wasn't good, and we didn't play our brand of football in the first half," said Eagles coach Bill Vonada. "We finished better, and I'm proud of our kids for finding a way to win, but we still have things to clean up."

In the first half, neither team mustered much offense as both defenses played physical football and forced mistakes. The half ended with no score.

Senior Pedro Estrada and sophomore Dylan McLeod had key interceptions for the Eagles. Junior Quentin Snead had an interception for the Royal Knights.

The Eagles had 96 total yards compared to 59 for River Ridge (1-5, 0-4).

In the second half, Springstead opened up a clock-eating drive from its own 20, which stalled at the River Ridge 13-yard line. On a bizarre play, the Eagles' field goal was blocked and picked up by Tyler Mahla, who ran for 10 yards and the first down. The dramatic play set a Mahla's 3-yard touchdown rush off a boot-leg play to put Springstead up 6-0 with 5:41 remaining. Scott Baker converted the point after.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles added two more touchdowns. The first came with 9:27 remaining, as sophomore running back Daniel Wright scored on a 3-yard touchdown rush, and Mahla found senior receiver Shane Scorza open in the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Junior Jesse Cowan had two sacks for the Eagles, as the Springstead defense held River Ridge in check all night.

The Royal Knights didn't score until the 2:24 mark of the fourth when senior quarterback Josh Maisel scampered for a 6-yard touchdown.

BRADENTON —A wild Class 2A, District 5 shootout resulted in a Carrollwood Day 56-35 victory over Bradenton Christian on Friday night.

"It was very fun," said quarterback Vidal Woodruff. "I've never been in a game like this in my life. We came out here and played hard. That's a really tough team. They're really good. They have a heck of a coaching (staff), and they have really good players."

Of course, Woodruff's line in the victory — 10-of-12 passing for 330 yards and five touchdowns — made it easier for the senior to grin following Friday's pivotal district clash.

The Patriots (6-1, 4-1) did damage early en route to building a seven-point halftime lead. Woodruff found an open Andy Embody for a 51-yard touchdown strike midway through the second quarter. CDS' Nate Lewis finished with a game-high 218 receiving yards.

Robert Davis tallied 151 rushing yards on 14 carries, including a 65-yard rumble to pay dirt for the Patriots. Davis, though, was limited as he's been hobbled the past few weeks with an injury. That meant Woodruff and the passing game were relied on, and he obliged with a five-TD effort as well as a rushing score late.
