JUPITER — The Cardinals had two aces when they arrived at spring training. Now, both are hurt.
Chris Carpenter left a 7-1 victory over the Marlins in the third inning Tuesday after feeling a "twinge" in his left hamstring. The injury came one day after fellow All-Star Adam Wainwright had season-ending elbow surgery.
Carpenter was diagnosed with a strained left hamstring but said it isn't serious.
"They don't think it's very bad so I'm not concerned with it," Carpenter said. "We'll wait and see (today). I'm sure they will know more, but what they say is, it doesn't seem like it's very bad."
The Cardinals' bad luck continued in the next inning when setup man Mitchell Boggs, rushed in to replace Carpenter, was escorted off the mound after straining his lower back. Boggs said his back has been bothering him throughout the spring.
DUI STUNS INDIANS: The Indians were disappointed to learn that veteran outfielder Austin Kearns, 30, was arrested in Lexington, Ky., on Feb. 12 on suspicion of drunk driving and never told the team. The Indians didn't find out about the incident until late Monday night.
Also, the Indians acknowledged that centerfielder Grady Sizemore, who had microfracture surgery on his left knee in June, likely won't be ready for opening day. And first baseman Nick Johnson is close to signing a minor-league deal.
BONDS SAGA: Personal trainer Greg Anderson again chose jail over testifying against former client Barry Bonds, whose perjury trial is scheduled to begin March 21, more than three years after his original indictment. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston told Anderson he would be jailed for contempt for the duration of the trial. Bonds pleaded not guilty — for the fourth time — to revised perjury charges.
VETERAN RETIRES: Outfielder Garret Anderson, 38, retired after 17 seasons, 15 with the Angels. Anderson finished with a .293 career average, 2,529 hits and several Angels team records.
NEW HISTORIAN: Author and analyst John Thorn was appointed Major League Baseball's official historian.
OBITUARY: Greg Goossen, a former catcher who was signed by the Dodgers at 18 and led a colorful life after his baseball career by working as a private detective, boxing trainer and character actor, died Saturday at his Sherman Oaks, Calif., home. He was 65.
PIRATES: Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel will have an MRI exam after feeling elbow soreness in a throwing session.
RANGERS: Right-hander Brandon Webb threw 46 pitches in his second bullpen session in three days. The former NL Cy Young Award, who hasn't pitched in the majors in two years, said he felt good.
TWINS: Rightfielder Michael Cuddyer will sit a week or two after having a wart on his left foot removed. He tried to treat the wart this winter, but it got infected. … Closer Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless inning against the Red Sox in his first game since an elbow injury wiped out his 2010 season.
