Sickles knows that to reach state, it will need scoring from more than its two star players.
And clinging to a five-point lead with Amber Henson and Bre Crum fouled out with three minutes left, Sickles held on for a 58-51 road win over Charlotte in a Class 5A region quarterfinal.
"We know that the other kids need to play," coach Mark Key said. "And I think them playing without those two earlier in the year really paid off. You had freshmen making free throws late in the game to clinch it."
Henson finished with 26 points, and Crum had just six, but the Gryphons received a boost from sophomore Sara Hartman (10). The Gryphons also rebounded from a tough district final loss to Freedom.
"We did a good job of forgetting about that," Key said. "We moved forward to the next game."
